Physiotherapy after knee surgery at home — recover with confidence, no travel needed
After knee or hip surgery, appropriate and continuous rehabilitation is key to moving again and managing daily activities. A home physiotherapist keeps your training on track with your treatment plan and adapts it to your abilities.

Why is physiotherapy after surgery important?
After knee surgery you may have pain, swelling, a stiff joint, weak leg muscles or unsteady walking. Rehabilitation should start as your doctor advises and according to your treatment plan, to help restore movement, build strength and practise walking safely.
How can a home physiotherapist help?
The physiotherapist assesses pain, swelling, joint range of motion, muscle strength and walking ability, then plans training to suit your stage of recovery and your limitations.
Training may include knee exercises, strengthening, practice getting in and out of a chair and bed, and walking practice with a walking aid where appropriate.
How does practising at home help you return to daily life?
Practising in your real surroundings lets the physiotherapist guide the movements you need every day — walking around the house, using the bathroom and, when you're ready, the stairs — and spot anything in the home that could raise the risk of a fall.
Family members can also learn how to support and care for you properly, and which signs mean it's time to stop practising or contact your care team.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions and length of rehab depend on the type of surgery, your condition before the operation, your symptoms afterwards and how each person progresses. The physiotherapist will monitor your progress and adjust the plan as needed, and you should keep practising as your care team advises.
Which symptoms mean you should see a doctor quickly?
If pain or swelling clearly gets worse, the wound becomes red, hot or starts to discharge, you have a fever, or you notice anything unusual that hasn't happened before, contact your care team promptly. If you have difficulty breathing, chest pain, or sudden swelling and pain in the leg, seek emergency care immediately.
Rehab after surgery doesn't always mean travelling to a clinic. Suitable patients can receive physiotherapy at home, following the treatment plan and any limits set by their doctor, so recovery stays appropriate and safe.
